The hatchery building is 3600 square feet(120 ft x 30 ft) and is supplied with 200 gallons per minute of ground water. The water temperature is constant at 58oF, which is optimum for fingerling production. In the right foreground, you can see the degassing system that ensures optimum water quality for the hatchery.
| Inside, the hatchery has 18 tanks. Each tank is 120 cubic feet with total tank volume of 2160 cubic feet. Production capacity for the hatchery is more than 5,000,000 fingerlings per year. Each tank has: 1. automatic feeders (blue tops) to deliver optimum feeding rate and frequency 2. oxygen injection (lower left corner) for optimum growing conditions 3. automatic emergency oxygen system (hose between the two feeders)
| Tellico Trout Hatchery has three backup systems: 1. Automatic Oxygen Diffuser System with solenoid switches (see picture above) This system begins supplying oxygen immediately if electrical power is interrupted. 2. Caterpillar Generator (below left) Ten seconds after the electrical power is interrupted, the propane-powered generator automatically starts and is capable of operating the entire hatchery. 3. Recirculation System This system is a manually operated, gas-powered recirculation system (below middle) with a down-flow bubble contactor (below right). These three systems ensure uninterrupted optimum culture conditions for dependable fingerling production.
We also have a monitoring and alarm system that will automatically dial all hatchery personnel if conditions are less than optimum. This system will continue to contact personnel until the system is manually turned off.

Eyed eggs (below top - the eyes of the developing embryo can be seen) are received from Troutlodge, a trout egg supplier in Washington state. The eggs are incubated in modern upwell incubators (below middle) until they hatch. The hatchlings are called sac fry (below bottom). We can produce a 3 inch (80 fish per pound) fingerling in 85 days.

All of this technology and the knowledge we have gained in over 31 years of trout aquaculture experience allow us to consistently produce high-quality trout fingerlings that are specific pathogen (disease) free.![]() |
