Tellico Trout Farm is located on historic Tellico Creek. In the early 1800's this valley was settled by the Ramsey family. The story is told that some wanted the Cherokee Indians run out of this area and the Ramsey brothers agreed to help. In return for their assistance, the Ramsey's were given much of the upper valley. By the late 1800's, this was the center of commerce in the area. The Big White House, which has been restored, was built about 1870 (Click Here for Picture). It served as a general store, blacksmith, post office, grist and saw mill. The mill (Tellico Mill) was powered by a 25 foot overshot water wheel. In fact, many of the mill components are still here!
The trout production system was constructed in 1985 and 1986 and Mr. Mike Macke purchased the farm in 1997. Tom Ort was hired as the manager in 1998. Previously Mr. Ort was the hatchery superintendent at Pisgah State Fish Hatchery for the NC Wildlife Resources Commission. Over the years, Tellico Trout Farm has built a highly successful customer service based business. A liquid oxygen system has been added, more than doubling historic production capacity and the largest commercial trout hatchery on the east coast is located on the farm (Tellico Hatchery). Tellico Trout Farm has been blessed with highly talented and committed employees. The staff will continue to use the more than 30 years of aquaculture experience to serve customers.
